UofT Scholar Family Introductions
Hello Friends! As COVID cut our semester short, the incoming and returning scholar groups were unable to meet each other. As a result, starting a conversation on this platform might substitute the introductions that would have occurred in person. As this summer will likely be slightly challenging for everyone, making connections will allow people to use each other as resources and supports (plus, I just wanna meet the new folk). Additionally, this could be valuable for the incoming group who may benefit from the returning group's experiences and lessons. So here goes...Name: Keenan (pronouns: he/him)Birth Place: Officially born in Brampton but grew up in a small rural town in Northern Ontario. Year/POSt: Going into 4th year studying International Relations and Diaspora and Transnational StudiesResearch (or plans for the summer): I study the implications of the Ontario education system on the identities of newcomer students. My research questions concern how learning English education impacts newcomer identity, especially when it occurs simultaneously to the loss or marginalization of one's heritage language (and thus, linguistic access to their culture). (For the returning scholars) The main lesson I learned last summer: A crucial lesson was learning that it is easy to lose oneself in literature and lose track of your research objective. Make sure you have a narrow enough framework for research to ensure you can efficiently decide which research is relevant or which will take you in an unnecessary rabbit hole. (For incoming scholars) <Insert either 'Something I'm looking forward to' or 'A question/concern I have'>:The TV show/videos I am currently binging: I am rewatching the West Wing, which is an old favourite that is always an enjoyable watch. What is an article/book/scholar that helped shape your academic pathway/passion: Imagined Community by Benedict Anderson. It made me a question and challenge everything that makes us who we are. Now that you know about me, please take 2 minutes to create your own introduction replicating this format! Looking forward to digitally meeting you all and never hesitate to reach out for chats, questions, or movie recommendations!

Hi Joelle! I love this research project and am excited to read it once finished. I just finished a really intriguing book (narrative non-fiction not academic) that you might find useful. It's called The Looting Machine and teaches a foundational understanding of the hidden realities and relationships that promote the resource curse across Africa while challenging some of the simple narratives. Just something I thought might be useful! - Keenan
