Hi! I'm Yasmin and I am a part of the 2022 cohort of Laidlaw Scholars. I am currently in my final year of study of the Neuroscience course at the University of Leeds! My research project is on Microglia Activation in Ageing and Neurodegenerative Diseases. 

Currently, a student majoring in Financial Technology at HKU. Areas of interest include finance, economics, politics, and Web 3. 

Hi! I'm Laetisha, a medical student at UCL, currently studying global health for my intercalating year. In specific, I take interest in understanding how healthcare gets from labs to communities and what becomes the barrier between people and access to this care. Healthcare should be a human right shared by all, but, unfortunately, this isn't the case in many communities, whether it be in a developed country or a developing one. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to be involved in the Kasiisi Project (KP) in Uganda this summer, which also helped me understand what it is that these communities need in order to establish a path towards healthcare.

I was fortunate enough to conduct academic research under the supervision of Stephen Gethins,  Professor of Practice in International Relations at the University of St Andrews and now a sitting MP. Stephen introduced me to a truly fascinating yet often overlooked area of International Relations: sub-state and regional actors and their place in global politics, with a focus on Scotland in particular. Through this, I have developed an interest in Scotland's place in the world as a nation without an independent foreign office, but as a nation with extensive international influence and a powerful global diaspora. This topic formed the basis of my Laidlaw project, my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation, and my PhD. I take a keen interested in other academic fields such as politics, history, and philosophy. Although an International Relations and Sociology student first and foremost, I had the opportunity of studying Ancient History and Classics alongside my degree for two years. If I were to ever win the lottery, you would find me endlessly cycling University, spending my remaining days studying Ancient History and Philosophy, Politics, Anthropology, Theology, Theoretical Physics and Maths, or whatever subject I develop an interest in down the line. Since leaving the University of St Andrews and the Laidlaw Programme, I completed an MRes degree at the University of Glasgow in Sociology and Research Methods. I received a scholarship for a PhD in Sociology at the University of Glasgow which I am completing part-time in addition to my role as Research Officer at Carers Trust Scotland - a charity supporting unpaid carers which I had previously volunteered for. My PhD is a continuation of my Scottish diaspora studies, seeking to reconcile the notion of 'civic Scottishness' with the Scottish identity of the lived diaspora.  

Hi, I am Natalie Magness, a first-year Human Sciences student at University College London interested in biological anthropology and social entrepreneurship. I am a strong believer that seeing humans through both a biological and social-cultural perspective will bring us closer to solving our biggest global issues.  I am a Malaysian of a Chinese and Eurasian ethnicity and was fortunate enough to have been raised in Qatar, an extremely diverse nation. This third-culture identity has moulded me into a global citizen passionate about connecting with others but also has exposed me to the different hardships and injustices others face, reinforcing me desire to use my privilege to help others. I work in UCL Education and Student Affairs at UCL as a Project Manager. Our office has responsibility for improvements in education and the student experience, including the integration of teaching and research. I have managed high profile projects including a Graduate Support Scheme and a Review of Postgraduate Education. I currently manage the day to day administration of the Laidlaw Programme.
