Week 4:

What went well?

Scribing with the use of smart phrases went well. I was able to develop almost 100 smart phrases, each specific to the physician and speciality that I was working with that day. This allowed me to write my notes more thoroughly and quickly.

What could have been done differently?

I could have handled the clinic flow better by pre-charting for each of the patients. My pre-charting would have included sifting through the patients’ history and reviewing their recent labs and imaging prior to their visit.

What did I learn about myself while working with others?

Working with others provided me insight on my ability to work as part of a team. I discovered my strengths in contributing to group efforts, resolving conflicts, and supporting others. I also identified areas where I struggle, such as compromising and delegating tasks.

What did I learn about leadership?

I learned that an important part of leadership is understanding the influence you have on others and recognizing the impact of your actions. The physicians I worked with all recognized that their words, decisions, and behaviors affected the patients and the overall healthcare team dynamics.

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

I want to specifically focus on learning more about otolaryngology (ENT) because that speciality has sparked my interest the most. I also want to start pre-charting for all of the patients I am working with.
