Week 4: Reflection

For my Leadership-in-Action, I am actively volunteering and (later) conducting fieldwork for a research team from the McCourt School of Public Policy involving disappearing Catholic Schools and the impact it can have on communities.

What went well?

The center did not have as many volunteering opportunities during this week so I mainly focused on research-related tasks. I met with the team from McCourt and NCEA where everyone gave updates. Here I learned about the larger scope of the project and some of the motivations behind the research as well. I have scheduled follow-up appointments with the team in addition to one-on-one appointments with my professor and other research assistants. Beyond this, I have identified an opportunity to obtain records currently unavailable to the team that I planned to pursue for the following week.

What could have been done differently?

Because I did not have the chance to work at the Center this week, I feel like I could have identified opportunities beyond working in the community. However, later down the line, I believe I will have more opportunities to diversify some of the work I do on the research end.

What did I learn about myself while working with others?

I feel like I am more aware of the difficulty of coordinating larger teams to work on projects. It can be difficult to organize larger research initiatives and I operate in just one section out of a larger organizational mission for two large organizations.

What did I learn about leadership?

I feel that I am continually learning that leadership is often self-directed. Continuing to self-improve while working with others requires a level of dedication and intentionality.

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

I had a meeting scheduled with my professor for the following Monday and I am always eager to engage with the Center where I mainly coordinate with the food program managers.

Thanks for this update Josh! What are some of the ways you're hoping to diversify your work in the next two weeks?
