LiA Weekly Learning Log: Week 1
My Leadership in Action Project is "Empowering the Underserved: Efforts to Promote Health and Wellbeing in the DC Community and Beyond." I am working at the Medical Clinic at So Others Might Eat (SOME) and Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) for this project.

What went well:
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
- AFC: I talked with my mentor about my ideas for the summer and how to implement what I’ve learned in school to teach the patients. I then ran the Move to Health exercise class and discussed incorporating exercise into our daily lives. I also advised the amount and types of exercise one should aim for every week.
- SOME: I met the leadership at the clinic and talked with patients and staff. I learned that they were giving FIT tests for colon cancer screening but that the patients were not doing the tests right, so I wrote up a clear explanation of how to do the tests to prevent problems in the future.
What could have been done differently:
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
- AFC: I think the day went really well! My orientation is next week, so after that, I will have a better sense of the clinic and my role for the summer.
- SOME: After arriving and noticing the dress wear of the staff, I returned home to put on scrubs to fit in better with the staff and to make my position clear to the patients. I should have asked beforehand if they had any advice for the dress code, but I now know what to wear.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviors and values I exhibited
- AFC: I am proud of how I engaged with the patients and how I fostered connection and conversation between the patients. The leadership skills I’ve learned enabled me to connect with the patients, assess their needs, design an exercise class and wellness talk around their needs, and then facilitate relationships among the patients.
- SOME: I am proud of how I identified a problem (patients not conducting FIT tests properly) and then took measures to fix it (creating FIT tests instructions).
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
- AFC: Leadership requires getting to know the people and their societal norms to form relationships with them, so they trust your guidance and feel comfortable sharing their opinions
- SOME: Leadership requires listening! By listening to the patients and clinic staff, I was able to identify and solve a problem (Properly conducting FIT test)
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What do I still need to develop?
- AFC: I want to focus on increasing knowledge of and participation in the Move to Health workout class at the clinic that I’m running. To do this, I will make a list of participants to reach out to, and then contact them and promote the Move to Health exercise class
- SOME: I want to focus on getting to know the patients and the clinic to determine the best location, time and topics for my educational presentations.

I applaud the drive and initiative you took to properly teach and describe how to conduct FIT tests for colon cancer screening. Being able to not only run an exercise class but also go beyond your job description and aid people in need shows truly leadership. Couple this with your attentive listening and sympathy for others and you will produce a great report in the coming weeks. Looking forward to seeing your progress in this Leadership in Action project.
Thank you, Jefferson! I look forward to hearing about your research project and getting to know each other better through our Georgetown network.
