What went well:
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
- AFC
- Created CareMessage to be sent out every Monday at 4pm until 1/18/2024. Since starting my leadership in action project I got a job to work there starting in January, so I have it on my calendar to check on the message then, and if all looks good, to resume the message.
- Created a document outlining the responsibilities of the coach, interpreter and role coordinator for the exercise class
- Created a flier on canva to recruit coaches for the exercise class
- Created an overview document on How To’s for the workout class (includes how to log onto Zoom, how to set up the room, and an outline of the class)
- Created a document of compiled workouts so that regardless of disabilities and limitations, there is an easy list of exercises to refer to
- SOME
- Created a podiatry bulletin board on ways to prevent feet problems and common feet problems to look for
- Created a bulletin board about different types of screening (cholesterol, mammography, diabetes, colorectal cancer, pap smear)
What could have been done differently:
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
- SOME: No patients came in on July 3rd. The staff said this was common at the beginning of every month because the patients get money from the government then, so they do not come into the medical clinic. As a result, I wasn’t able to talk to any patients on this day, but I was able to use the time to focus on creating new bulletin boards.
- AFC: Went well!
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviors and values I exhibited
- SOME: I thrive in a dynamic and busy work environment. I have found that I derive greater satisfaction from my work when it is busy and involves interacting with many individuals. On the day when no patients came into the clinic, I spent the entire day working on the bulletin boards, which did not captivate me as much. I love the vibrant atmosphere of a bustling clinic, where every day brings forth the anticipation of encountering new faces and learning new things.
- AFC: Self-motivation and initiative are crucial in my role. My mentor only comes in the mornings and sees her patients, while I spend all day at the clinic. As a result, being able to identify tasks that need to get done and being creative about solutions has been critical!
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
- Leadership necessitates effective prioritization. Within the MTH program and in patient education at So Others Might Eat, there exists a multitude of tasks to be handled. Therefore, having the capacity to independently discern the most important tasks has been instrumental in my roles at both So Others Might Eat and Arlington Free Clinic. The ability to prioritize efficiently allows for effective leadership and ensures that essential responsibilities receive adequate attention.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What do I still need to develop?
- SOME: Figure out alternative ways to present information to the clients besides posters, finish bulletin boards and start on new ones, shadow nurses and providers to observe more provider - patient interactions
- AFC: Work on increasing participation in the MTH class (63 people signed up for texts, only ~5 showing up)
