What went well:

The progress I made; what was achieved and done

  • 8 new participants attended the Move to Health class after my phone calls last week
  • Oversaw the exercise class, providing assistance to the coach and effectively translating instructions for the patients.
  • Implemented a 5-minute meditation session at the end of the exercise class, promoting relaxation and mental well-being.
  • I called all of the patients who didn't answer or who asked me to call them back at a different time last week and got mostly "yes's" about joining the class
  • Established a CareMessage account to send out weekly automated messages about the class
  • Entered the contact information of 63 participants who opted for reminder messages into the system
  • Developed an automated message to be sent every Monday afternoon to patients who opted into the reminders, to hopefully improve class attendance
  • Read through all of the information in the various binders to get a sense of the information we had
  • Accepted to be a scribe at the clinic as well! Starting this weekend, I will spend additional hours completing the medical scribe training, so that at the end of the summer I will be able to scribe at the clinic!

What could have been done differently:

Things that did not get done and/or could be changed

  • Everyone at the class had a different injury that they didn’t tell me over the phone (broken ankle, hurt shoulder, hurt knees, etc) so we could not go on with the class as planned. I created exercises on the spot for each of the different patients, but it was challenging to get everyone to stick to the exercise I had shown them instead of
  •  I was giving everyone a different exercise due to their physical condition, but it was difficult to get them to stick with the exercise I told them and not follow along with the exercise I was giving to someone else
  • Faced language barriers as one participant spoke, Arabic one spine english, while the rest spoke Spanish, making it challenging to provide cohesive instructions to everyone simultaneously
  • This experience inspired the idea of creating a database of workouts tailored to individuals with different physical limitations, including visual guides for universal understanding

What did I learn about myself when working with others?

Contributions, behaviors, and values I exhibited

  • Being enthusiastic about the work means a lot. This encouraged the patients to participate in the class and helped me get a position as a medical scribe for the clinic.

What did I learn about leadership?

Leadership attributes and insights I developed

  • My work here has enforced the importance of listening. By listening to the patients when calling them, I learned the importance of creating a weekly reminder text to them which I was able to do this week. This has also been important during the exercise classes. By listening to them I was able to create workouts tailored to their needs.

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

What do I still need to develop?

  • Develop comprehensive exercise plans for individuals with diverse physical limitations, including visual aids for clarity and ease of implementation
  • Organize and consolidate the information gathered from the Move to Health Class system over the past few years
