What went well:
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
SOME:
- Listened to an educational presentation by the substance abuse nurse - she gave them handouts on cholesterol, talked to them about cholesterol but in an interactive way (i.e.: What do you know about cholesterol?) and then played Jeopardy with them
- Went through their pharmacy and made lists of patients who haven’t picked up their medication in the past month
- Researched medical educational trainings for the clinic to subscribe to for their staff and providers
- Developed posters and presentations about immunizations for National Immunization Month (Aug) and Healthy Aging Month (September)
- Called patients who had been referred to the Diabetes Clinic & Support Group to encourage them to come to the meeting this week on Diabetes and the Eyes
- Distributed Hepatitis posters and engaged in conversations with patients, emphasizing the importance of testing
- Called patients with appointments this week to remind them about their appointments
- Shadowed the nurse practitioner and listened to conversations about diabetes, smoking, and general health
AFC:
- Set up, oversaw and cleaned up exercise class with instructor and interpreter
- Listened to patient - provider interactions and created history of present illness for each of the patients
- Met with clinical director about ways to improve program: decided next step is to call every patient that has been referred again and ask them how to make the class more accessible, what the barriers are for them coming, etc
- Met with my mentor about progress i’ve made and steps to be taken in the future
- Incorporated feedback into various documents and provided guidance to mentors on using the care message system.
- Made new flyers for MTH program coach recruitment
What could have been done differently:
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
- SOME: it went well!
- AFC: Although the nutritionist was expected to attend the workout class, they were unable to make it. However, arrangements have been made for their presence in the following week.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviors and values I exhibited
- SOME: From helping the Substance Abuse nurse, I learned the importance of being enthusiastic with the patients. By standing to the side but encouraging participation in the activities, the patients were excited about the activities.
- AFC: When a new instructor joined the class, whom I had corresponded with via email previously, I introduced myself in person saying that I would be overseeing the class. However, I recognized that she, being around 50 years old, did not appreciate being a 19-year-old overseeing her. This experience taught me the importance of knowing when to limit introductions and take a step back in certain situations.
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
- Be perceptive of the environment and context. Understand when to take a supporting role and when to assume a more active leadership position.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What do I still need to develop?
- SOME: Figure out the best method to present the immunizations and health aging presentations to the clinic. Create deliverable.
- AFC: Call all of the patients who have been referred to try and increase participation. Create deliverables.
