LiA Project Outline
The Zubin Foundation is a registered charity in Hong Kong focused on enhancing the lives of ethnic minorities by reducing suffering and providing opportunities. It was established in memory of little Zubin, who passed away at the age of three due to medical negligence. In 2023, it supported around 12,000 service users with a core team of 28 staff members. The foundation operates initiatives such as the Ethnic Minority Well-being Centre, which provides mental health support in multiple languages, and Zubin’s Family Centre, catering to the special educational needs of ethnic minority children. Over its decade-long journey, the Zubin Foundation has made a meaningful impact on the community while upholding its core values of integrity, caring, and collaboration.
- Which SDGs will your LiA project focus on?
The project focuses on Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education. Its objective is to ensure that more ethnic minority children have access to inclusive and equitable education, providing them with valuable learning opportunities.
- What are the expected outcomes?
The expected outcomes include ensuring the successful organization of various capacity building initiatives at the Zubin Foundation, which are regularly held to raise awareness and promote inclusion for ethnic minorities. Additionally, I am anticipated to engage in the foundation’s efforts to support ethnic minority children in Hong Kong, particularly through social emotional activities and parent education programs that will feature a range of valuable workshops for parents.
- How are these going to be measured/evaluated?
The measurement method may involve tracking the number of workshops I assisted with and the number of minority children I worked with.
- What is the problem being identified and how will your plan improve this problem/situation?
The main problem I identified is the lack of recognition and equal opportunities for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. This issue manifests in various forms, including limited access to resources, employment discrimination, and cultural misunderstandings that hinder integration into the broader community. To address this problem, my proposed plan aims to enhance existing projects at The Zubin Foundation by implementing capacity-building activities that promote cultural understanding. These initiatives are designed to bridge the gaps between ethnic minorities and the wider population, fostering a more inclusive environment. By leveraging the Foundation’s ongoing efforts, such as community outreach and support programs, this plan seeks to significantly improve access to opportunities for low-income ethnic minorities.
- How will you develop your leadership skills further via this opportunity?
I plan to develop my leadership skills through this opportunity by actively engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders, including ethnic minority families, colleagues, and staff. Working closely with these groups will help me improve my communication skills, as I will need to adapt my approach to connect with different audiences and ensure their voices are heard. By helping families access essential services, I will gain hands-on experience in collaboration and problem-solving—key elements of effective leadership. Plus, sharing my insights to support ongoing projects will not only allow me to contribute but also help me learn from others’ perspectives. This exchange of ideas will strengthen my leadership abilities and create a supportive environment that values teamwork and inclusivity.
