As I reflect on the past two years as a Laidlaw Scholar, I am struck by the profound impact this journey has had on my personal and professional development. The programme has been a transformative experience, allowing me to grow as an ethical leader and a global citizen. Through rigorous research, leadership training, and immersive experiences, I have honed skills that will guide me throughout my life.

Summer One: Building Foundations in Research and Critical Thinking

In the first summer, I embarked on a research project titled "Business Models and Capabilities of Companies in the UK with Circular Economy Oriented Business Models." This endeavour challenged me to delve deep into the world of sustainable business practices and the circular economy.

Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

Analysing the adoption of circular economy models among UK SMEs required me to tackle complex problems. I navigated vast amounts of data, identified patterns, and assessed the effectiveness of different strategies. This process sharpened my critical thinking skills, teaching me to approach problems methodically and creatively.

Research Capability

Conducting independent research enhanced my capability to design and execute a comprehensive study. I developed proficiency in research methodologies, data analysis, and academic writing. Collaborating closely with my supervisor, I learned the importance of rigor, ethics, and perseverance in scholarly work.

Engagement with the Professional World

Interacting with professionals from various companies provided invaluable real-world insights. Through interviews and discussions, I connected theory with practice, understanding the practical challenges and opportunities of implementing circular economy principles. This engagement deepened my appreciation for the real-world impact of academic research.

Scholarship and Commitment to Learning

The project demanded a significant commitment to learning. I spent countless hours studying sustainable business models and environmental policies. This dedication reinforced the value of scholarship—not just as academic achievement but as a lifelong pursuit of knowledge for the betterment of society.

Teamwork and Communication Skills

While much of the research was independent, collaboration was essential. Regular meetings with my supervisor and peers provided opportunities to discuss findings and exchange ideas. Presenting my research at the end of the summer enhanced my communication skills, enabling me to articulate complex concepts clearly and effectively.

Summer Two: Developing as an Ethical Leader and Global Citizen

The second summer shifted focus from research to leadership in action. I joined Guardian Inc. in Kyoto, Japan, working on their "kimino micata" project—a system designed to combat child abuse and bullying through student support and communication.

Leadership Abilities

Implementing "kimino micata" across schools required strong leadership. I coordinated with teachers, managed project timelines, and adapted strategies to meet local needs. Leading initiatives in a foreign context taught me how to inspire and motivate others, make informed decisions, and handle responsibility with integrity.

Self-Knowledge and Awareness

Immersing myself in Japanese culture challenged me to step outside my comfort zone. Facing language barriers and cultural differences demanded adaptability and self-awareness. I became more attuned to my strengths and weaknesses, understanding how my behaviours impact those around me.

Effective Communication

Communicating effectively was paramount. I learned to overcome language barriers using translation tools, body language, and visual aids. This experience underscored the importance of clarity, empathy, and active listening in building meaningful relationships.

Critical and Creative Thinking

Addressing sensitive issues like bullying required innovative solutions. We developed engaging workshops and interactive sessions tailored to the cultural context. This fostered my ability to think critically and creatively, devising strategies that resonated with students and educators alike.

Collaboration and Team working

Working alongside a diverse team of local staff and international volunteers highlighted the power of collaboration. Sharing different perspectives and skills enabled us to achieve common goals effectively. I learned that teamwork amplifies impact and fosters a supportive environment for everyone involved.

Social and Cultural Intelligence and Awareness

Living in Kyoto offered a rich cultural immersion. Respecting customs, understanding social norms, and embracing new experiences broadened my global perspective. This cultural intelligence is essential in today's interconnected world, enabling me to interact respectfully and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Resilience and Determination to Achieve

The journey was not without challenges. From navigating unfamiliar environments to overcoming setbacks, I developed resilience. Each obstacle reinforced my determination to adapt, learn, and persist in the face of adversity—a vital trait for any leader.

Continuing as a Global Citizen and Ethical Leader

The Laidlaw Programme has instilled in me a deep commitment to ethical leadership and global citizenship. Moving forward, I aim to:

  • Advocate for Sustainable Practices: Utilising my research insights to promote circular economy models and environmental responsibility in business.
  • Champion Education and Well-being: Continuing efforts to support initiatives like "kimino micata," ensuring that every child has a voice and a safe environment.
  • Cultivate Cultural Understanding: Embracing diversity and fostering connections across cultures to build a more inclusive world.
  • Lead with Integrity: Upholding ethical standards, transparency, and accountability in all my endeavours.
  • Mentor Future Leaders: Sharing my experiences to inspire others to pursue leadership that prioritizes ethical principles and global impact.

Conclusion

Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the opportunities and growth facilitated by the Laidlaw Leadership and Research Programme. The blend of academic rigor and practical leadership experience has been transformative. I have developed a holistic set of skills—from critical thinking and research capabilities to leadership and cultural intelligence.

This journey has not only prepared me for future academic and professional pursuits but has also shaped me into a proactive global citizen committed to making a positive difference. As I continue on this path, I carry forward the lessons learned, the relationships built, and the passion ignited to lead ethically and effect meaningful change in the world.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this incredible experience. I look forward to the continued journey of learning, leading, and contributing to a better global community!
