Throughout the Laidlaw research program, I had the opportunity to engage with my community and advocate for them which is the most rewarding part of my research. Over the past two months, I have been distributing surveys through my local libraries and compiling a list of reading resources that my local libraries can utilize. By doing this, I hope to assist my community members rather than simply engaging with them. I am excited to compile my data and explore the statistical tools available to me. As an economics major, I have had few opportunities to intersect my passion with education and this research project has allowed me to merge everything accordingly. Thus far, I have encountered some challenges with the survey distribution. Some individuals are skeptical of answering questions on the survey because of their immigration status. I hope to continue building trust with my community members in a way that allows me to understand their needs. Even though I was born and raised in Queens, NY the education system has changed drastically over the past 12 years and I would like to eliminate assumptions and learn about the current workings of the system today.
