Laidlaw Week 3-4
Between the end of the third and fourth week, Fundacion BAI led the Congreso GEVIHS, a conference bringing doctors around Mexico, the United States, and Spain to share recent advancements in HIV research. The conference lasted three days from Friday to Sunday. It was my first time leading a large scale event consisting mainly of professionals so the first day felt quite intimidating. The first day mainly consisted of marking the attendance of medical professionals and guiding them to the appropriate sessions. I was in charge of keeping a record of this administrative work to ensure the physicians received their certification for attending the event. Many professionals required this certification to validate their sponsorships. By the end of the night, our team sat with the professionals to converse over dinner and watch a presentation of folkloric dance native to the state of Yucatan. During the second day of research presentations, Fundacion BAI organized an awards ceremony. Given that one of honorees mainly spoke English, I was charged with translating his award and speech outlining his contributions to HIV research. By the third day, I had connected with the medical professionals from the US over my passion for public health and advocacy for the Latino community.
