In between my second to fourth week at Fundacion BAI, I continued to focus on data entry and attended my first in-person event at the Anexo for men, which is the rehabilitation center for individuals with drug addiction and/or alcoholism. The anexo is located outside the city of Merida, Yucatan near the pueblos, which are smaller townships. There were men of ages 16 and above living at the anexo, which was a blue house that had multiple rooms and shared living accommodations. The building resembles the alcoholics anonymous organizations in NYC, where individuals must voluntarily agree to leave their families until they rehabilitate to follow a disciplined routine. At the anexo, there was a large faith component. Many identified as Catholics. In many rooms of the anexo and the courtyard, you could see the Virgen de Guadalupe, saints, and many men wore necklaces with crosses on their necks. Here, religion was largely used to help individuals reflect on their decisions and inspire them to change for their themselves, and loved ones. After taking the time to speak with the coordinators of the anexo, my team and I started our educational session on what HIV is and HIV transmission. This session was needed to obtain informed consent before the actual HIV test and help individuals learn if they’ve had recent exposure. By the end of the campaign, approximately 40 individuals were tested.
