About Partners In Health Malawi (APZU)

Partners In Health Malawi (Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo, APZU) works alongside the Malawi Ministry of Health to deliver holistic, community-embedded care in Neno District. APZU’s model treats health as inseparable from social and economic circumstances, combining clinical services with social support, mental health, nutrition, and systems strengthening. This LiA involved work on expanding tuberculosis (TB) case detection so that people in rural areas can access diagnosis and care earlier. Learn more at https://pihmw.org/about-us

Responsibilities & Ideal Background

Depending on the project and timing, Scholars can contribute to community outreach for TB case-finding, data collection and cleaning, research support, or communications that help translate findings into practice. There may also be scope to support monitoring systems, digital tools, or economic support programmes running alongside clinical care.

A good fit is someone interested in global health, medicine, public/community health, health systems, or development who is happy to work in a resource-limited, rural setting and to collaborate closely with local teams. Skills in research, data/Excel, community engagement, or social protection are all useful; so are flexibility, cultural humility, and good professional communication.

LiA Champion

Our LiA Champion is Shoshana Daly (Tufts University). Curious about this project but not sure where to start? They can share candid insights from their experience in Neno—how TB case detection work was organised, what skills were most useful, and how APZU partners with government rather than building parallel systems. You can contact them at shoshana.daly@tufts.edu. You can also view their profile here: https://laidlawscholars.network/users/shoshana-daly
