Attraction Birds Conservation (ABC)

About Attraction Birds Conservation (ABC)

Attraction Birds Conservation (ABC) is a Tanzanian organisation working to protect the country’s rich biodiversity while creating opportunities for young people. ABC promotes bird conservation, afforestation, and environmental education, training local guides and encouraging women, girls, and elders to access skills for tourism, hospitality, and environmental work. The aim is to help communities benefit from Tanzania’s wildlife without compromising future generations.

Responsibilities & Ideal Background

Scholars can support environmental education sessions, bird identification and monitoring, outreach with local schools, and project work to strengthen ABC’s programmes (e.g. communications, simple data collection, or guide-training materials). There is scope to contribute ideas for growing the NGO’s impact and visibility.

A good fit is someone who cares about the environment, is proactive and culturally sensitive, and is happy working in a small, open, very friendly team. Backgrounds in education, environment/sustainability, community engagement, or project management are all useful.

LiA Champion

Our LiA Champion is Andrew Edginton (University of St Andrews). Curious about this project but not sure where to start? They can share candid insights from their experience in Arusha—what work they did in 6 weeks, what made a difference, and how a scholar can help ABC scale its programmes. You can contact them at ae68@st-andrews.ac.uk or by phone at +44 7553 936407. You can also view their profile here: https://laidlawscholars.network/users/andrew-edginton#
