Healthcare Vocabulary and Confidence
This week’s focus was on healthcare vocabulary, since many participants had expressed difficulty communicating in medical settings. We practiced words and phrases related to doctors’ appointments like describing symptoms, asking for an interpreter, and filling out basic forms. It was inspiring to see how quickly students grasped these phrases when we tied them to their lived experiences. For example, we role-played a scenario where someone described a headache or asked where the pharmacy was. Several participants told me they now felt “less nervous” about visiting the doctor. This reminded me of my work in Beijing with the Chinese Organization for Rare Disorders, where families also faced challenges around health communication. Bridging language gaps, whether in China or in the U.S., makes a world of difference.
