Starting at Chinatown Service Center
This summer, I began my Leadership-in-Action Project at the Chinatown Service Center (CSC) in Washington, DC. CSC supports Asian immigrants with essential services in language, health, and education. My project focused on helping Chinese immigrants overcome barriers in daily life, particularly with English communication and healthcare navigation.

During my first week, I got to know the staff, observed existing programs, and began outlining lesson plans for bilingual ESL workshops. I also started drafting pamphlets to introduce community members to CSC’s services. What struck me most was how much trust and cultural sensitivity matter, since many families feel hesitant to engage with unfamiliar institutions. My goal became not just to teach but to create welcoming, approachable spaces where learning could feel empowering.
