Prior to the program, I was nervous and worried as I didn’t really know what to expect and if I was capable. Although I put myself into the unknown, I still needed to improve my self-belief and confidence. The Laidlaw LiA program turned out to be a transformative experience that not only broadened my perspective on leadership but also taught me invaluable lessons on adaptability.

In Mexico City, I helped one local NGO called Huerto Roma Verde to promote sustainable tourism. I led a group of local volunteers to work on guided tour script and tested it with a lot of good comments. As I navigated through various challenges and opportunities, I realized that effective leadership and adaptability can have profound impacts on my personal growth and success. One of the key takeaways from the program was the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. I have never been to Mexico before and cannot speak Spanish. By pushing myself to explore unfamiliar territories and embrace uncertainty, I discovered new strengths and capabilities that I never knew existed within me. This experience taught me that true leadership begins with the willingness to take risks and confront the unknown.

Furthermore, the program emphasized the significance of adaptability in today’s rapidly changing world. I learned that being adaptable is not just about reacting to unforeseen circumstances but also about proactively seeking opportunities for growth and development. Through various simulations and real-life scenarios, I honed my ability to think on my feet, make quick decisions, have conversations with strangers bravely and adjust my strategies according to the evolving situation.

Moreover, the collaborative nature of the program fostered a sense of teamwork and camaraderie among scholars. In Huerto Roma Verde project, we have four scholars and around ten local volunteers. I discovered the power of effective communication, empathy, and collaboration in achieving common goals and overcoming challenges. Working closely with individuals from diverse backgrounds and skill sets not only broadened my horizons but also taught me the importance of leveraging collective strengths for mutual benefit.

In retrospect, the program was not only about acquiring theoretical knowledge or honing technical skills; it was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. It challenged me to confront my limitations, embrace change, and strive for continuous improvement. The lessons learned from this experience have equipped me with the confidence and resilience to navigate the complexities of the modern world and emerge as a more effective leader and adaptable individual.

Through this project, I have come to realize that true leadership is not about having all the answers but about having the courage to face uncertainties, the humility to learn from failures, and the resilience to adapt to changing circumstances. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Laidlaw Leadership-in-Action program, and I am confident that the lessons I have learned will continue to guide me on my leadership journey.
