LiA project--week 1 reflection
What went well?
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
During this week, I successfully organized and hosted the international yoga day event on campus. The sessions, including the consulate speech, yoga sessions, meditation session, and breathing techniques session by our guest speaker, were conducted seamlessly. Participants actively engaged in the activities and benefited from the experiential learning opportunities provided. Therefore, I believe the project successfully fulfilled its goal of sharing knowledge about yoga and meditation with HKU students and staff. In addition, besides being one of the key organizers, I also played the crucial role of the MC and successfully fulfilled the duties, which ensured a cohesive and engaging experience for the participants.
What could have been done differently?
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
Reflecting on the project, there are a few aspects that could have been improved upon. First, a more meticulous approach to time management could have helped ensure that each session stayed within the allocated time. This would have prevented the need to cancel the quiz session due to the extended duration of Yogaraj Ji's yoga session. In addition, given the last-minute confirmation of the Consulate's attendance, it would have been beneficial to establish more proactive and regular communication channels with the NGO we collaborated with and the Consulate from the early stages of planning. This could have allowed smoother coordination and minimized more uncertainties surrounding their participation.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited
During the collaborative work on this project, I gained valuable insights about myself. I learned the significance of early preparation and considering all the necessary details to ensure the smooth execution of an event, which often requires more work than initially anticipated. Taking responsibility as the key organizer and actively overseeing the project's various aspects proved crucial in achieving success. Additionally, I discovered the importance of adaptability when unexpected circumstances happen during an event, which gives the need for continuous communication with helpers to maintain a seamless flow.
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
Through this project, I gained valuable insights about leadership, particularly in terms of taking responsibility. I learned that leadership is not only about guiding and directing others but also about taking ownership of the project's success. As a leader, it was essential for me to assume responsibility for the overall execution and outcomes, rather than solely delegating tasks to others. By taking the initiative and actively overseeing the project, I could ensure alignment with the desired goals throughout the process.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What I still need to develop
Moving forward, my focus will be on developing more effective communication skills and honing my abilities as an MC. I hope I may go beyond simply reading the script and strive to engage the audience on a deeper level.
