At the midpoint of the project, I conducted a thorough investigation into the operational model of the Chunmiao Foundation. My research was conducted both online and offline:
1. Offline Participation and Insights: I volunteered multiple times at the Foundation's offline awareness events. This gave me direct exposure to the public's genuine reactions to the 'premature infant' cause, from shock and hesitation upon seeing the hyper-realistic 26-week, 650 g baby model to being moved by stories of humane care such as 'kangaroo care' and 'octopus companions'. I experienced the entire donation solicitation process firsthand, from setting up booths and introductions, to establishing identity and explaining the significance, and making eye contact. I also observed the practical effectiveness of QR code-based micro-donation technology. Visiting the Bayi Hospital, a key paediatric transfer centre in northern China, helped me to understand the close collaborative network between the Foundation and the medical system, and the important role that social workers play in connecting families and doctors.
2. Online Analysis and Learning: I systematically studied the Foundation's online promotional materials and consistently watched the Secretary-General's evening livestream, '1000 Days of Speaking for Love'. By analysing the presentation of online content and audience interaction, I evaluated the effectiveness of the communication and formulated ideas for optimisation based on observations and feedback. For example, I considered how to make storytelling more relatable and how to demonstrate the use of funds more clearly. I comprehensively evaluated communication effectiveness by leveraging SQL to extract and aggregate structured data from the foundation’s online livestreams (e.g. the Secretary-General’s 'Speaking for Love in 1000 Days' series), such as keyword frequency in comments, interaction rates and viewing duration distribution, while using Excel to visualise unstructured interaction elements (e.g. sentiment analysis of comments and topic trend heatmaps via scatter charts and timelines). Based on these data insights, we developed optimisation strategies, such as applying SQL's WHERE and GROUP BY clauses to identify features of high-engagement content, and using Excel's PivotTables and conditional formatting to pinpoint high-impact topics. Additionally, I incorporated audience feedback to develop concrete proposals, such as 'embedding real-time polling during livestreams' to boost participation, and 'adopting dynamic infographics to break down fund usage' to enhance transparency.
This period gave me a profound understanding that many families abandon treatment not only due to the high cost of NICU care, but also due to a lack of information and confidence. Chunmiao provides precisely this: a comprehensive ecosystem offering financial, informational and psychological support.
