Each day varies depending on the workshops, tours, and outreach occuring week by week. A typical day often involves visiting the Museum of Natural History to work in the GLAM office, focusing on one of my two projects (the Box project and the ORIGIN project) or supporting other staff members, such as Sarah, Susan, or Joy, with their events.
By seeing behind the scenes of a museum, my work has pointed to several questions: What does a community want, and what do we choose to preserve? Are some objects kept beyond their time? At what scale does the work of decolonization begin? Since the start, my routine has become more definitive with arriving at the office and following a schedule of events that support a range of communities. My involvement varies based on the needs of the tour group, whether it be supervising an event, taking notes, or participating directly with people.
The past week, my highlights include seeing an original case of insects labeled by Darwin on a public tour, learning more about magic and amulets at the Pitt Rivers with a volunteer tour group, and supporting at Iffley Academy (a school for students with Special Needs) as they use museum artifacts to learn about the history of chocolate. I have attached two images below!
