My summer experience has been filled with learning about the inner workings of museums and the diverse identities these institutions embody. Museum workers serve as cultural ambassadors, mental health providers, educators for young children, and academic researchers. My work has honed in on utilizing my research skills for public presentation, and more importantly, fostering genuine human connections. Discussions with my Supervisor (Helen) and co-workers: Susan, Sarah, Joy, Beth, and Bridget, were instrumental in shaping my project.
In observing their engagements with various communities and in lengthy discussions about their work, they continue to inspire me that support for marginalized individuals comes in many forms. I learned that the most significant aspect of this work includes asking people what they need and tailoring engagements based on lived experiences. To extend beyond active listening, the action proves to be just as crucial, if not more. In terms of leadership, each of these people impacted me differently, but will continue to influence the way I approach my work from a place of empathy, compassion, and understanding.
Here is an attached photo of my first time seeing sheep on walks while contemplating my work this summer!
