LiA Report Part 3: Supporting and leading weekly programming

More specifically, what did I do in partnership with my supervisors? Context: they had internal challenges (i.e., the new campus didn’t have any materials, and the new coordinator was having to double-up tasks.) I’ll post some pictures in my next post!

My learning points:

  • When my supervisors asked me to lead a programming, it was important for me to clarify:
    • Which mood do you want from this space? Conversational or very structured? Fun or serious?
    • Is it okay to bring in creative art activities?
  • Frame ideas as “we can try this out and change/cancel them next time if need be.” This way, the new activity feels low stakes;
  • Sometimes, the NGO has hidden resources that are unused because staff is working with other things. In my case, there were a lot of art supplies available in their old campus, but no one put it to use. So I 1) organized them 2) asked if I could use them at some workshops;
  • Highlight: Create activities that can be replicated after you leave!
