Hello! My name is Payton Bonang and I am a student in Trinity College at the University of Toronto, St. George. I am pursuing an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree (HBA) with a major in Environmental Studies, a Certificate in Sustainable Pathways, and a double minor in Urban Studies and Forest Conservation.

I'm Ryan, a 2026 Laidlaw scholar at Tufts University. I was born in New York City, but my father is from Karachi, Pakistan and my Mum is from Brisbane, Australia. Now my parents' immigrant dreams live on in my 3 brothers and I as we move across the country and pursue our unique interests. I believe it is precisely this complex history of migration in my family that has inspired my passion for migration studies. 

Hi, I'm George. I'm an Economics and Human Geography student at the University of Leeds researching animal welfare legislation and ethical review policies across Africa. Hello! I’m a first-year Economics student at the University of Leeds, with a strong interest in economic inequalities and development.  My research focuses on the Leeds University Business School Skills Maps - a visual representation of the skills that the student’s course is equipping them with. I will be investigating how these skills maps can be made more accessible and better aid students in the articulation of their transferable skills, hopefully enhancing graduate prospects. Hi! My name is Maghai, and I am a rising junior at Georgetown University in Qatar studying International Politics. As a Laidlaw Scholar, I am conducting research on civilian perceptions of UN peacekeeping withdrawal in South Sudan and how local communities experience security and international intervention. Growing up through conflict and displacement has shaped my interest in community-centered policy, accountability, and research that elevates local perspectives in global decision-making.

Hi! I'm Lauren, a first year Biology student at Cambridge, with a particular interest in Biochemistry and Physiology. This has inspired my LiA, looking into how the Social Determinants of Health are being addressed locally in Cambridge by The Red Hen Project - a hyperlocal charity working to support families experiencing hardship to raise happy, health, and independent children. Working alongside the charity has exposed me to the stark health inequalities that exist even within Cambridge, strengthening my passion for public health and inspiring me to pursue a career focused on improving outcomes for children, families, and communities.

I am particularly interested in improving access to global education and how AI is reshaping the traditional forms of education. Currently, I am developing research through the Laidlaw Scholars Programme, focusing on university-level assessment methods in the context of GenAI.

Hello, my name is Rebecca Liu, and I am a second-year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. I am pursuing a double major in Public Health and Peace, Conflict, and Justice, with a minor in Women and Gender Studies. For my Laidlaw research, I am examining global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) national action plans (NAPs) through a gender-inclusive and gender transformative perspective. The goal of my research is to understand how NAPs can be improved to better address the AMR global health crisis for marginalized groups of gender and sexuality.

Hi, my name is Mazzi! I am an undergraduate at MIT studying Chemical-Biological Engineering. Passionate about the biomedical sciences, I aspire to merge my research interests with humanitarian impact via the Laidlaw Scholars program and my prospective career as a physician-scientist. 

Celine Lau is a rising sophomore at Georgetown University studying Neurobiology with a minor in Statistics on the pre-medical track. She is passionate about understanding how environmental and biological factors influence human health, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. As a Laidlaw Scholar, Celine is investigating the relationship between environmental exposures, such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and student health outcomes. Her research explores how differences in air quality across regions may contribute to disparities in educational and cognitive outcomes, with a focus on developing a deeper understanding of environmental determinants of health. Celine also conducts research in the laboratory of Dr. Priyanka Joshi at Georgetown University, where she studies metabolic pathways involved in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS. Her broader interests lie at the intersection of neuroscience, environmental health, and translational medicine, with the goal of contributing to research that improves prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complex diseases. Beyond research, Celine is involved in healthcare and community service initiatives, including EMT work, free clinic volunteering, and student organizations focused on music, bioethics, and Alzheimer’s awareness. She hopes to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, combining clinical care with research to address pressing challenges in human health.

Hello! I am a first year undergraduate student at Durham University studying Modern European Languages and Cultures, including advanced Spanish and ab initio Italian. I believe that the intersection between languages and culture, politics and peacebuilding is hugely important in a multicultural but increasingly divided world. I am therefore passionate about using my skills for good, especially through my research project into ethical and compassionate immigration policy.  I'm really excited to work alongside the 2026 scholars!
