Hello, I'm Emmy, a third year modern history student at the University of St Andrews, and I'm working on a research project concerning Russian émigrés in Victorian Britain. Specifically, I'll be taking a look at the literature they chose to translate and share with the British public via journals like Free Russia, considering which subjects, themes and morals took precedence. The idea is to understand how representatives of marginalised groups can shape cross-cultural relationships through literary exchange. Beyond this, my interests lie in the history of ideas, especially ideas about childhood, imagination and religion. When out of the library, I like to career around town and beyond on my bike (Mackerel), spot some birds, listen to a good album and eat up whatever apocalyptic media I can find (check out The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth). Hello I am Ella! I am an undergraduate Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Leeds, driven by a curiosity to understand the biological processes that underpin health and disease. I am particularly passionate about exploring how scientific research can be translated into real-world medical advancements. Alongside my studies, I dedicate time to an array of extracurricular activities that reflect my interests, including performing arts, hiking and acting as an avid member of my university hockey team. My research project is entitled 'Active Learning Strategies for Biomedical Education: A Design Thinking Approach'. Hello, my name is Katarina and I'm a first-year Physics student at Durham University. I'm looking forward to being a part of the 2026 cohort with my project about mitigating the effects of light pollution. I aim to continue studying Physics to PhD level, and am particularly interested in researching sustainable technology. My passion for public speaking shapes my goal of driving scientific communication globally, as a vessel for sustainable change. Hi there, I'm Joe, an undergraduate student at the University of Leeds, and a part of the 2026 Laidlaw cohort, in the second year of my studies, undertaking an integrated master's in Civil Engineering. I'm from a coastal village in Northumberland, UK. Around my studies, I love hiking, playing ice hockey and spending time with friends. Academically, as aforementioned, I'm interested in a wide range of civil engineering disciplines, including structural and environmental engineering; my research project is in a slightly different field, however. Over the course of the summer, I shall be studying applicability of neuromorphic imaging, set cameras for use to measure and map cell deformities in real time. Language is my greatest obsession.  I bring a unique perspective to communication, shaped by years in campaign management, organizational leadership, and brand development--and I believe storytelling sits at the vanguard of translational research. I'm drawn to what sits beneath the surface--crafting the solution from its past and sharing its story. The throughline connecting sustainability, toxicology, and policy fascinates me. Hello, my name is Hannah Treagus, I'm a current 2nd year psychology student at The University of St Andrews. My research project titled "Exploring the Impact of Wellbeing Intervention Strategies on Master’s Students: Valuing the Student Voice" is focused on exploring and advocating for the underrepresented voice of postgraduate taught (PGT) students. I'll be working with a group of postgraduate students to create a student-led intervention that can hopefully be utilised globally as a wellbeing tool. I have a significant interest in Educational Psychology but would love to connect with scholars of any discipline. I also love travel, photography, baking and horse riding in my free time and am always up for a chat!

Hi! My name is Imogen, and I am currently a first-year studying Psychology at Durham University. I am passionate about understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying everyday behaviour, which is why my research project is focussing on empathy development in children. My experience working with children from range of backgrounds as a volunteer tutor and a lifeguard have emphasised my interest in human behaviour, and the study of psychology constantly questions the classic nature vs nurture debate, as I intend to do. A key skill for leaders in empathy, so my hope is that my research can support understanding into neurodiversity and other conditions that cause empathy to develop in different ways, so that these people can have the best opportunities to succeed!

Hi, my name is Carys Williams and I am a first year student studying Medicine at the University of Cambridge. My interests mainly lie in public health, preventive medicine and infectious diseases, however I find all aspects of clinical and community healthcare interesting. I am interested in potential research into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and other pressing global issues, and seeing how we can ensure access to appropriate healthcare systemically by reducing inequalities. This summer I am completing my Leadership in Action project with a charity in Cambridge dedicated to helping children and families facing hardship. The charity hopes to expand to a new under-resourced region in Cambridge and I will be evaluating the current services available for children, and where the charity can create the most long standing impact. The project is focussed on preventative measures to ensure children can live happier and healthier lives by reducing barriers they may face.
