Week 6 Lia Reflection
Week 6: week of June 24
Context: As part of Laidlaw Leadership in Action, in the summer of 2024, I have volunteered to teach English and help out at the largest slum community in Bangkok through the Duang Prateep Foundation.
What went well: This week I focused on doing a deep reveiew of what I had taught the kids. I listed out the key takeaways from the lesson plans from each grade and tried to really re-emphasize them so they can consolidate in the kids' long term memory. I am happy to say that the kids did well in this review and I am confident that each student has walked away with much stronger english skills than when they first started.
What could have been done differently: Maybe it would have been useful to end this week off with some sort of test or assessment. It would have been interesting to give those kids the same assessment in the very begginning and see how much they improved on it.
What were some of the issues: I hope that these kids will continue to work on their english even after I leave. I have been working with the teachers to try to have a curriculum for them that will build off of what they learned and help them improve. However, I am afraid some of them will forget the material.
What do I plan to do next: I plan on saying goodbye to the students and teachers and wishing them the best of luck on their academic future.
