Week 5: week of June 17

Context:  As part of Laidlaw Leadership in Action, in the summer of 2024, I have volunteered to teach English and help out at the largest slum community in Bangkok through the Duang Prateep Foundation.

What went well: The kids have thoroughly been enjoying these new games. We have even been getting small prizes like little toys and pieces of candy so that the kids have even more of an incentive to win the games that will help them learn English.

What could have been done differently: Some of the kids, while excited about the prizes, have been getting a bit rambunctious over them. While they are now more competitive in the games to win, they have been trash talking and fighting the other kids for example to seem more "competitive."

What were some of the issues: While the kids are exhibiting more of this behavior, I hope that the improved learning they get from the games will ultimately outweigh the increase in rowdiness.

What do I plan to do next: I plan to continue to introduce some worksheets that reinforce material learned from the songs and games to continue increased engagement.
