What went well?

The progress I made; what was achieved and done

Learnt more about the area surrounding the District Elderly Community Centre (DECC) and also the social service system for the elderly people in Hong Kong generally. I also started getting in touch with the elderly people in the community.

What could have been done differently?

Things that did not get done and/or could be changed

Being more engaged because I was still fitting in and getting to know more about the place and the people. This is my first time working at an NGO, and indeed in an environment where there is no other people (e.g. students from the same university) I have more connections with, even though I may not know them in advance. I would try to be more engaged.

What did I learn about myself when working with others?

Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited

I am a little reserved in engaging with the elderly people. I was also a bit impatient that I had to review the functionality of Kareoke DVDs (to be used in the DECC) an elderly brought to the centre for inspection but the equipment needed could not be found and if found, do not function properly. Although I did not really show my impatience to others but I know I was very impatient. Hopefully, I can be more patient. And I started realised that my punctuality is a problem as well so I shall improve in this regard.

What did I learn about leadership?

Leadership attributes and insights I developed

To be more proactive and reach out to more elderly people.

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

What I still need to develop

Probably start engaging more with the people by myself because the things I did were usually done alone or with my supervisor only. I was not too proactive in communicating with the elderly people although of course I engaged with the elderly people. The level of engagement can be increased though.
