Reflective Journey: Leadership-in-Action Project in Peru
Project Overview
My six-week engagement with MakeSense in Peru through the Leadership in Action (LiA) initiative centered on enriching the volunteer experience in Casa Ronald McDonald Peru to foster a deeper sense of belonging and community. The primary objective was to create a more vibrant and engaged volunteer network, which is crucial for the organization's capacity to support families in need.
Engaging with a variety of stakeholders—including volunteers, Casa Ronald McDonald staff, and the families they aid—shaped our project's course. Our approach involved collaborative discussions where we leveraged our collective intelligence to address the needs at hand. The input from these discussions was vital, feeding into continuous feedback cycles that helped refine our strategies and actions.
Through direct community interaction and iterative feedback loops, we implemented both short-term initiatives and laid the groundwork for sustainable, long-term strategies. These included organizing a volunteer appreciation event that bolstered community spirit and implementing a "challenges" system which would inject a new level of enthusiasm and camaraderie among the volunteers. encourage competition, motivation, and team spirit within the volunteers. To ensure the longevity and adaptability of our initiatives, we created a comprehensive manual that provides a detailed blueprint for continuing these practices, ensuring that these new practices can be carried forward independently, maintaining their efficacy and adaptability over time.

The Experience and Leadership Learnings
This project marked my first deep engagement with a community vastly different from my own cultural background in Asia. Adjusting to and learning from Peru’s rich cultural tapestry was both challenging and immensely enriching. It underscored the importance of cultural immersion, particularly in understanding and empathizing with the local community's unique characteristics and needs.
Leadership in this context taught me the crucial role of adaptability and the power of listening. Leading meant facilitating an environment where local voices could emerge and guide the project, ensuring that our solutions were genuinely reflective of the community’s needs. This was especially critical given my relatively short time within the community, highlighting the need to quickly and effectively tune into local dynamics and perspectives.
Cultural Insights and Personal Reflections
Navigating a new cultural landscape taught me invaluable lessons about the nuances of community engagement. Each interaction, each shared story, and every piece of feedback helped me better understand the subtle yet powerful ways culture shapes community dynamics. This experience highlighted the importance of being an empathetic listener and a facilitative leader who supports and amplifies local voices. Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the profound personal and professional growth I have undergone. I’ve learned that effective leadership is often about learning as much as it is about guiding. This project has not only met our set objectives but provided a rich soil for growth.
Beyond the project's formal goals and outcomes, this experience was profoundly enriched by the relationships I formed with fellow scholars. Each scholar brought their unique perspectives, insights, and inspirations, contributing to a vibrant learning environment. The friendships forged in the heart of Peru—amidst its challenges and charms—have left an indelible mark on my heart. These connections transcended professional collaboration, evolving into deep, personal bonds that are filled with shared experiences, laughter, and mutual support. The memories created during this journey are as impactful as the project's tangible outcomes, reminding me that the paths we walk are as significant as the goals we achieve.

Conclusion
As I reflect on my time in Peru, I am grateful for the multitude of lessons learned and the relationships forged. The project was a vivid illustration of how leadership can be both a service and a journey of mutual growth. Moving forward, the insights gained from this experience will undoubtedly influence my approach to new challenges, ensuring that I carry forward the values of empathy, collaboration, and community-centered leadership in all my future endeavors.
