As I reflect on my recent summer Leadership in Action Project at EIT Health Spain, one aspect that stands out is the profound insight I gained into leadership dynamics within a global community. This experience provided me with a unique opportunity to explore my own leadership style, observe different leadership approaches, and navigate ethical challenges in a professional setting. In this piece, I will try to reflect on and analyse these leadership insights and their implications for future plans.

During my time at EIT Health Spain, I had the privilege of leading and collaborating with a diverse team of professionals. This experience allowed me to gain a better understanding of my own leadership style. I discovered that effective leadership extends beyond authoritative decision-making; it involves fostering an environment of trust, open communication, and empowerment. By encouraging constructive dialogue and valuing diverse perspectives, I was able to harness the collective potential of our team. I had brilliant mentors and leaders around me who taught me this, not just by talking about it but by doing everything with such compassion and care. This experience highlighted the importance of adaptability, as leadership styles must adjust to the unique needs of each project and team.

One of the amazing aspects of this LiA project was the opportunity to observe various leadership styles within our global community. It was evident that constructive leadership takes many forms and can be highly effective in achieving shared goals. Some leaders were assertive and decisive, driving progress through unwavering determination, while others adopted a more inclusive approach, focusing on consensus-building and collaboration. Witnessing these diverse styles reinforced the notion that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership. Success lies in adapting leadership techniques to specific contexts and fostering an environment where each team member can thrive.

The idea of ethical leadership presented its own set of challenges during this experience. Ethical choices are rarely straightforward, and they are often tested within the intricate landscape of healthcare innovation. We engaged with dilemmas related to transparency, fairness, and accountability. However, it was in these moments of ethical deliberation that the importance of principled leadership was crucial. Our commitment to upholding ethical standards was unwavering, even in the face of complex decisions.

The leadership insights gained during my LiA experience at EIT Health Spain have profound implications for my future plans. I believe that leadership is not a static concept but an evolving skill that requires continuous self-assessment and adaptation. As I join future projects and collaborations, I am committed to embracing a leadership style that prioritises inclusivity, adaptability, and ethical integrity. I believe in the power of constructive leadership to inspire, empower, and drive positive change.

This experience has underscored the importance of valuing diverse perspectives and fostering a culture of open communication and trust. By doing so, I hope to create an environment where team members feel motivated to share their unique insights and contribute to shared goals.
