Halfway through my journey as a Laidlaw Scholar, I have gained invaluable experiences and insights – from conducting my first research project and attending my first academic conference to completing the Oxford Character Programme. I am astounded by the opportunities I had in my university life and surely cherish every step of the process.
My research allowed me to identify gaps in the field of speech therapy and shed light on them to provide more holistic management for our clients. This experience deepened my awareness of the importance of driving meaningful improvement by proactively pursuing cutting-edge research as a leader.
Yet research alone is not enough. It is equally essential to disseminate findings and envision prospects. I was thus thrilled to present my work during the poster symposium at the Laidlaw Scholars Conference in New York. Interacting with scholars and professors around the globe reminded me that leadership extends beyond local action. It requires bringing impacts globally by raising public awareness on under-researched topics.
The conference also marked the beginning of the Oxford Character Programme, offering insights on cultivating character through self-reflection on our virtues and vices. The program emphasised leading with transcendence, growth, love, and integrity while avoiding excess and deficiency in any trait. Character strengths must complement one another to achieve a balance. I enjoyed reflecting on my character during the program and I am committed to lifelong practice and growth as a leader.
This summer, I will embark on a six-week journey with makesense_americas in Mexico City to address climate change. Working with the organisation Huerto Roma Verde, fellow scholars, and local volunteers, I am eager to contribute to societal impacts and strive and thrive as a leader.
