Week 5 LiA Reflection
Finalising and printing our deliverables
My penultimate week in Mexico began with finalising all our project deliverables. After deciding to transform the 10Rs posters into a booklet, the volunteers and our team worked together to design its cover and back cover, create a template for Huerto Roma Verde (HRV)’s introduction page, and draft and translate the introductory content. By Tuesday, we had completed the entire booklet design and sent the files for printing. Alongside the booklets, we had also finalised our stencil design for the waste separation tool and the information guides for HRV’s native plants. Although these two deliverables have yet to be printed, we look forward to seeing how HRV uses them in the future.
Organising a workshop for kids at HRV
On August 7th, we gave a 3-hour workshop for 40 kids at the summer camp at HRV. The kids ranged from 3 to 13 years old. The workshop contained a sustainability carousel with 10 activities, each focusing on one aspect of the 10Rs. For example, to introduce the concept of ‘reduce’, kids transferred water from one large container to another large container using smaller containers, trying not to spill any water throughout. To teach the concept of ‘repair’, kids repaired a cloth containing holes using patches. To put into practice the concept of ‘regreen’, kids planted dahlias in the mandala. These activities were all aimed at making the abstract 10Rs concepts easier to understand and implement using simple activities that kids can engage in. In the final activity with the theme of ‘replicate’, we distributed the 10Rs booklet we have developed to the kids, encouraging them to replicate the behaviours at home, at school, and in the community. Kids were very enthusiastic to receive the booklets, and some even requested an extra one to share with their siblings. We surely believe that the booklets we have created and the activities in the workshop bring a positive impact to empower sustainable behaviours and ecological awareness among the kids.
Preparing our final presentation
With our farewell party approaching next week, we have started preparing our final presentation to reflect on our six-week journey. Looking back, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment. From the initial uncertainty about our project direction to clarifying our goals and completing all deliverables, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I am excited to share our work and the impact we have made during this journey next week!
