I am extremely grateful to have completed my Leadership in Action project with the Timothy Smith Network based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Timothy Smith Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the digital divide for students from underrepresented and minority communities. As soon as I discovered TSN, I felt deeply drawn toward their mission of enhancing access to technology and digital literacy in underserved communities. They provide young people with an incredible amount of support, resources, and opportunities to teach them to believe in themselves and in their capabilities, no matter their race, gender, or economic background. TSN offers a variety of digital design and technology programs, ranging from digital design and health tech devices to agricultural technology. As someone who grew up as part of an ethnic minority group, I deeply related to the struggles and hardships these young people faced, not having grown up with easy access to technology resources that could help accelerate professional development. The Timothy Smith Network describes a program that I always wished to have growing up, and so I knew that I had to be a part of it.

My Work: Program Support & Conducting an Organizational Gap Analysis

My primary role at the Timothy Smith Network was to conduct an organization-wide gap analysis and a gap analysis on their three core summer programs: Elevating Agricultural Technology, Digital Design Intensive, and Tech Your Health. My approach to this project was systematic and comprehensive. I used both primary and secondary research methodologies to gather and analyse the data I needed. My primary research entailed conducting a student focus group, individual interviews with staff and past students, and preparing quantitative surveys on student experience. I conducted interviews with the TSN Director, the Head of Technology, the Strategy Consultant, and others, including students of the AMP program. One of the most insightful aspects of my research was the focus group with the AMP students. After weeks of data collection, inspiring conversations, and challenging moments, I was able to identify specific areas where TSN could make both organizational and program improvements to accelerate the success of their hard work. I also conducted a SWOT analysis workshop with the students, which was one of my favourite moments. Engaging in powerful conversations with the students while teaching them from my own knowledge was really something special.

Developing Recommendations to Bridge the Gaps

Based on my data analysis of the current state and the desired future state, I generated a detailed set of recommendations aimed at addressing the identified gaps. My recommendations were designed to be practical and actionable, ensuring they could be implemented effectively by TSN. One of the key suggestions was the creation of new programs under the Boston Design Academy, tailored to address specific skills gaps in the local community.

The recommendations also included strategies for improving existing programs. For instance, enhancing teacher training initiatives to better equip educators with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver high-quality STEAM education. Another recommendation was to establish stronger partnerships with local organizations and businesses to create more opportunities for students to engage in hands-on STEAM activities.

I also got the opportunity to host my own workshop and to have a short, guided tour of Tufts University, both of which were amazing experiences. I also got to assist the Head of Technology at one of her weekly computer classes, which she held with US veterans. It was one of the most eye-opening and memorable experiences I’ve had in a long time.

A Collaborative Experience

A unique aspect of my experience was the opportunity to work closely with TSN’s executive management. I had several meetings and interesting conversations with management. As the team size was quite small, I got a real behind-the-scenes look at how a community-based non-profit organization operates.

Reflecting on the Impact

Looking back on my experience as a Laidlaw Scholar with TSN, I am proud of the work accomplished and the impact it will have. The gap analysis and subsequent recommendations have laid the groundwork for enhancing their STEAM education programs and ensuring the students have improved learning and engagement experiences. I hope the improvements will motivate the students to fully immerse themselves in their work and take full advantage of this unique opportunity. I feel grateful to have contributed to TSN's mission and enriched my personal understanding of community-based education initiatives.

I have always been passionate about helping young people from underrepresented communities. However, working with the Timothy Smith Network has ignited my passion even more for making a positive difference through education. It was incredibly moving to witness the way that technology education directly impacted the young students. The skills and insights I have gained from this experience have deeply transformed my mindset and perspective on leadership. I will never forget my Leadership in Action experience because it showed me firsthand that no matter your background, you have the power to lead, inspire, and create a real positive impact on your community. It's not just that you can—you should.
