LiA Week 7 Reflection
What went well?
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
This week our team successfully came together in ensuring the students had an enjoyable final week of the program. The students were able to apply what they learned both in our culminating debates and the fun activities we planned.
What could have been done differently?
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
I think my department and I could have come up with ways to integrate instructions in other languages in the enrichment classes so that multilingual students would have been better able to participate. We made an effort to combat any language barriers in the academic classes earlier in the program, but this could have also applied to the enrichments.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited
I was called upon to cover for an absent coworker this week, which meant I had to work with a cohort of students I had not met before. It was a great opportunity to learn how to work with a new group of students and I think I did well at adapting my plans to their interests.
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
I learned that developing a more positive mentor-like (and less authoritarian) relationship with students made it easier to redirect behavior and build a sense of community in the classroom. I think this similarly applies to leadership within clubs or extracurriculars.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What I still need to develop
I want to take the skills I developed when leading a classroom to my campus experiences. My practice with facilitating a discussion amongst students will prove beneficial when leading club meetings this semester.
