Week 4 Reflections
How did the week go overall?

This week, I delved deeper into the interviews with immigrant women in Castel Volturno, learning more about their cultural backgrounds and personal journeys. It was a challenging week emotionally, as the stories I encountered were often harrowing. I found myself wishing I had been better prepared for the emotional impact of this work. The resilience and strength of these women continue to inspire me, even as their stories weigh heavily on my heart.

What went well?

The continuation of interviews allowed me to build stronger connections with the women. Their willingness to share their experiences helped me gain a deeper understanding of their lives and the cultural dynamics in Castel Volturno. The community’s openness made it easier to conduct the interviews and gather valuable insights. Despite the emotional toll, the sense of progress and the trust built with these women were significant achievements this week.

What could have been done differently?

I underestimated the emotional intensity of these stories. Preparing myself emotionally, perhaps by seeking advice from experienced professionals or engaging in self-care practices, could have helped me manage the emotional weight better. Additionally, researching more about the psychological aspects of interviewing trauma survivors might have provided strategies to handle the sessions more effectively.

What did I learn about myself while working with others?

I learned about the extent of my own privilege. Compared to the harrowing journeys and struggles these women faced, my experiences as an immigrant are relatively mild. This realization deepened my empathy and highlighted the importance of being emotionally resilient. The strength and courage these women displayed made me reflect on my own capabilities and the importance of emotional preparedness.

What did I learn about leadership?

I learned that effective leadership in this context means being a supportive listener and showing empathy without pity. It’s about understanding that the people you are helping want respect and dignity, not sympathy. Leadership involves being aware of your own limitations, continuously learning, and adapting to new challenges. Building trust and creating a safe space for these women to share their stories is a crucial part of being a good leader.

What do I want to develop and focus on next?

Moving forward, I aim to enhance my emotional resilience and seek ways to support my well-being while continuing these interviews. I want to develop strategies to cope with the emotional challenges and remain effective in my role. Additionally, I plan to explore more about the systemic issues these women face and how I can contribute to addressing them, both through my interviews and in broader advocacy efforts.
