What went well?
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
I assisted another scholar on 3D modeling. I did not knew much about it before teaching. Thanks to the crash course provided by the scholar, I was able to pick it up quickly and assisted his teaching.
What could have been done differently?
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
I could have proposed having the crash course before the scholar had designed the curriculum. In the end, the scholar was not able to finish his pre-designed basic tutorials, and the students missed out on some useful skills in Fusion 360. As a newbie on 3D modeling, my feedback for the curriculum will be valuable, as we might have a more accurate estimate for the time required for teaching, as well as what steps might require more explanations. They would have made the teaching more effective.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited
I learned that I was willing and able to break the conventions. For the past few years, Timothy Smith Network taught digital sketching before 3D modeling. However, after discussing with my fellow scholars, we found that students would benefit more if they learn 3D modeling before digital sketching, as they can then do sketching on their 3D models. We proposed our ideas to the people in Timothy Smith Network. They gladly accepted it. In the end, our students were very proud of their colored and sketched 3D models. It showed that we should not limit our thinking and should make changes proactively when they are well justified.
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
Leadership is not only about acting at the top and ordering others to work. It is also about supporting your team members and making them feel secured. This is how we build a team with strong alliance.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What I still need to develop
I need to develop on balancing personal and working relationship. We scholars have become friends, that it was a bit difficult for us to fully concentrate during our work time. We mixed casual chatting and serious work together, which may not be the most efficient. I need to reconsider what is the ideal balance and how do we achieve that.
