For my second summer project, I'm going to be working on an ongoing project called the Summit at UCL in London. This summer's work is similar to my project last summer which focused on pancreatic cancer and my work during the year which focused on liver cancer in that they are in the field of cancer biology/medicine. However, this project is on the public health side, specifically lung cancer screening, while my previous work was on the wet lab side. I wanted to pursue this work since it will help to further round out my experiences in the sciences. More specifically, after this project I will have had experience in the business side of science looking at biotech, the wet lab side from my time at Columbia labs, and now the public health side through this project. I think this is important as it will enable a more compressive thought process when it comes to thinking about challenges in the field of medicine. Another reason that I find it particularly exciting is that it will give me an opportunity to look into and work in the area of science education, which is critically overlooked.

This image is from my walk to work, taken using the lens from a disposable camera. I hope to take a lot more street photos while I'm here, and I am planning to play around with some new photographic techniques!

Liam, this sounds great! It's great that you are gaining multiple types of experiences within the same field and diversifying your skills, such as working in a wet lab, public health, the business side, and science education! Having a multidimensional perspective is so valuable when tackling complex issues in medicine. I am also interested in what you said about science education being overlooked, as this resonates with me. I am currently volunteering at the Women's Foundation Nepal, where I am seeing firsthand how important accessible education is in community contexts. The intersection between public health and education is essential, and it is exciting that your project will touch on that. Excited to hear more!
