During the first week, I spent a lot of time with the team, getting to know people and about how they thought about interacting with people. I find that one of the best parts of science is that communication is easy with scientists from all over the world since most often you will share similar goals and ambitions if you are in the same field, and at least similar though processes and value assessments. Aside from this, speaking with Londoners about lung cancer screening has been interesting because while much of the culture is similar, there are certainly differences that make the context of that conversation different. For example, in the US insurance coverage is a larger barrier to screening compared to the UK medical system, which albeit has its own host of challenges. Another one that I noticed even from just walking around London, but from talking to people as well, is the attitude and cultural acceptance of smoking. While smoking is normal in the US (at least in NY), and arguably quite common, it seems to much more common among people in London. Furthermore, I noticed that cigarettes seemed much more common here whereas in NY cannabis seems to have become more common. I haven't been able to find out why this is the case in as great of detail yet.
I've personally found meeting and getting to know new people to be slightly challenging, and it's been something that I've been working on, so this has been a great experience so far.
