LiA reflection (Week 6)
What went well?
All the major project components have been completed. We enjoyed our last time in the village and were given a warm farewell by the villagers. The whole team then headed to a resort for rest and reflection.
What could have been done differently?
I did a short interview with my host parents the day before we left the village. It was really inspiring to hear their sharing on their needs and views on international volunteering. Yet, it would be better if I had interviewed them earlier so that I had time to discuss more in depth on the topic and devise plans to help them.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
I need to enhance my mental flexibility. Sometimes, I might be trapped in thoughts that are not conducive to my personal learning.
What did I learn about leadership?
Empathy is an essential attribute of a good leader. Empathy is not only directed towards the service recipients, but also the teammates. Having known a person’s needs helps the leader to come up with solutions relevant to the person’s difficulties and to create a comfortable working environment.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
I hope to enhance mental flexibility, to be able to think from different dimensions as well as come up with creative and constructive solutions. Mental flexibility could help me deal with negative emotions and boost my creativity.
