Through interning at The Bristol Port Company, I have the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world context by developing a charity plan in collaboration with two local primary schools: Avonmouth Primary School and Crockerne Primary School. My role involves initiating contact with both schools to discuss potential partnerships and outline the framework for our collaborative efforts.
One of my primary responsibilities is drafting school agreements that clearly define the terms of our partnership. This task has allowed me to utilise my understanding of negotiation and communication skills, ensuring both parties comprehend their roles and expectations. By establishing a volunteering programme, I have facilitated meaningful engagement between The Bristol Port Company staff and the schools.
Through this internship, I am actively applying theories of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and community engagement that I have studied academically through my Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree. For instance, I am working closely with school representatives to identify specific needs for involvement, which includes mentoring and educational workshops tailored to each school's unique characteristics. This hands-on experience enhances my understanding of how businesses can positively impact local communities.
Moreover, effective communication is crucial for promoting our partnership within the community. Through my involvement at university societies, I have leveraged various channels such as social media to promote events and achievements. Similarly, I promoted our partnership with the two schools internally and externally to highlight the potential positive outcomes of our collaboration. This aspect of my internship reinforces my learning about public relations and stakeholder engagement.
