1. What went well?

The progress I made; what was achieved and done:
  • Covered key topics related to dysphagia, including symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment approaches, in a comprehensive manner in the support group.
  • Conducted an engaging and interactive activity using thickeners to demonstrate different consistencies (IDDSI levels) and their impact on liquids.
  • Incorporated a practical element by adding thickeners to water to create different consistencies, allowing participants to visually understand the concept.
  • Provided a tangible experience by observing the consistency of apple puree, which helped participants relate the information to real-life situations.
  • Facilitated discussions about challenges and strategies related to dysphagia management, allowing participants to share insights and learn from one another.
  • Posted content on dysphagia management to raise public awareness on swallowing difficulties.

2. What could have been done differently?

Things that did not get done and/or could be changed:
  • Allocate more time for participants to share personal stories and experiences related to dysphagia, fostering deeper connections among attendees.
  • Offer a follow-up session or resources for caregivers to further explore dysphagia management techniques and resources, such as contingency plans in case of sudden choking, or activities to train up swallowing muscles.

3. What did I learn about myself when working with others?

Contributions, behaviors, and values I exhibited:
  • Displayed patience and empathy when interacting with individuals with dementia, adapting my communication style to their needs.
  • Involved in planning and coordinating the interactive activity, ensuring its smooth execution.
  • Fostered a sense of inclusivity by actively encouraging all participants to contribute, regardless of their background or role.

4. What did I learn about leadership?

Leadership attributes and insights I developed:
  • A leader should actively encourage participation and foster an atmosphere where attendees feel comfortable sharing their insights.
  • The use of practical and hands-on activities can significantly enhance participants' understanding and engagement.

5. What do I want to develop or focus on next?

What I still need to develop:
  • Further develop my skills in managing and balancing group dynamics, especially when participants have varying levels of knowledge and engagement.
  • Explore additional creative and interactive methods to convey information, ensuring the content remains engaging and memorable.
  • Continue refining my ability to adapt the session in real-time based on participants' needs and reactions.
  • Strengthen my expertise in addressing specific challenges faced by caregivers of individuals with dementia, tailoring support to their unique needs.
