1) What went well?
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
- Established a local dementia support group and recruited participants from Nga Yin Association Neighbourhood Elderly Centre.
- Conducted a one-hour sharing session with a local dementia support group at Nga Yin Association Neighbourhood Elderly Centre.
- Introduced basic knowledge of dementia, including its etiology, symptoms and intervention approaches from the perspective of speech language pathology.
- Discussed difficulties faced by caregivers and proposed respective solutions.
- Collaborated with the social worker on content, materials and rundown of the sharing session.
- Published social media posts on dementia care to heighten public awareness.
2) What could have been done differently?
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
- Could have prepared materials with more layman terms, thus more easily understood by elderly with dementia and their caregivers.
- Could have prepared a more interactive warm-up game prior to the sharing session.
- Could have spent more time in exploring the work, organization and scope of services provided by ga Yin Association Neighbourhood Elderly Centre.
3) What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited
- I have learnt that I valued communication to a great extent. I strived to provide adequate opportunities for every participant to express themselves in the sharing session, as well as acknowledging the diversity of perspectives and opinions discussed.
- I also believe that collaboration is of utmost importance. Without the help of staff and social works from the center, the logistics and flow of the sharing session would not have gone smoothly.
4) What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
- I have realized the importance of being an effective communicator who could listen to different stakeholders with understanding, as well as effectively and confidently convey messages.
- I also highly acknowledge the significance of effective team work by working collaboratively across professions and disciplines (e.g., speech language pathology student, social worker, administrative staff, elderly with dementia and their caregivers) to provide services of high quality.
5) What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What I still need to develop
- I hope to communicate more with caregivers to understand the difficulties and struggles they face in a day-to-day context. I also hope to express empathy and mutual understanding.
- I hope to make effective decisions and be flexible during the sharing session.
