BC 2024 Summer LiA Week 4
Throughout this week, our focus has been on creating the summer camp study guide and teaching materials. Unfortunately, I will be back in the States before the summer camp starts, but it has been gratifying to help organize the overall structure and reflect on the materials we use.
Specifically, this week, our team established a general structure for the summer camp. For instance, we decided that the 25 kids would rotate to take on the classroom leader role over the four weeks to help them understand the meaning of responsibility throughout their daily routine. Additionally, we designated a spot in the classroom where they have the freedom to decorate, hoping this space allows them to reflect on what they have learned so far and build community bonding quickly.
Beyond these structural decisions, we continued focusing on developing the summer camp materials. This week, I worked on four units, including topics such as taking responsibility, using the STEP It Up! method to resolve conflicts, and understanding oneself positively.
For example, in the STEP It Up! course, our learning goals include:
- Students using all four steps of the STEP It Up! approach to conflict resolution.
- Students evaluating the possible consequences of various proposed conflict resolutions.
- Students building their self-efficacy in resolving conflicts with others.
We aim to enhance the following CASEL Competencies through these activities:
- Relationship Skills: Resolving conflicts constructively and practicing teamwork and collaborative problem-solving.
- Social Awareness: Experiencing self-efficacy.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my progress this week as it has been quite efficient. A fun highlight this week was Monday's traditional Chinese festival, the Dragon Boat Festival. I watched several dragon boat races and enjoyed the traditional food, Zongzi. Next week will be my last week onsite in China, and I will miss it a lot!
