AI-Driven Circular Economy Transformation: A More-Than-Human Exploration Through Generative AI Interviews
The research project that I will be working on this summer is "AI-Driven Circular Economy Transformation: A More-Than-Human Exploration Through Generative AI Interviews," and Dr. Rosario Michel Villarreal will be helping me throughout the process. There is an urgent global need to transition towards sustainable and circular economic models. With environmental challenges, such as resource depletion and waste accumulation, growing more critical, innovative solutions are essential. Generative Artificial intelligence (genAI) represents a powerful resource in reshaping our approach to sustainability. This research is vital to bridge the gap between the AI community and the sustainability domain, investigating how genAI can actively contribute to advancing the circular economy principles. Understanding the potential roles of genAI in resource optimisation, waste reduction, and sustainable practices can revolutionise industries and redefine our approach to responsible consumption. My motivation for this research stems from a deep commitment to contributing to a sustainable economy. By exploring how AI can revolutionise circular economy practices, I hope to uncover innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote resource efficiency. The potential for AI to drive significant environmental and economic benefits is immense, and I am excited to be at the forefront of this exploration. This research aligns with my passion for sustainability and my academic interests in finance, aiming to create impactful change.
The first two weeks I will be dedicated to comprehensive literature review, familiarising with relevant frameworks associated with the circular economy, and the development of a robust conceptual framework for interviews. This initial stage will culminate in the submission of a literature review report. In the following two weeks, I plan to engage in a review of key literature related to generative AI and ethnography to gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Following this, I will conduct interviews with generative AI entities like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Bing, and Bard. Transcripts of these interviews will be meticulously recorded and prepared for analysis via NVivo. The final two weeks will involve thematic analysis of the interview transcripts. I will identify recurring themes, patterns, and insights from the interactions with the genAI systems, aiming to gain valuable insights into their potential contributions to the circular economy.
