2024 LiA Week 4 Review
What Went Well: By Week 4, I found myself becoming more comfortable and confident in my data collection duties, whether in the clinic or the hospital ward. The familiarity with the environment and the processes allowed me to work more efficiently and effectively, which was a reassuring development.
The family medicine project, while initially seeming straightforward, revealed itself to be more challenging than I anticipated. The task of listening to and verifying audio recordings required intense focus, especially when dealing with difficult-to-hear segments. Though the work was tiring and tedious, it pushed me to develop greater patience and perseverance, which are valuable skills in any meticulous task.
This week also involved assisting with another taster lecture, which was different from the previous ones. This session was tailored for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and was conducted in Cantonese, focusing on medicine, AI, and genome sequencing. Being in a computer room where every student had access to a computer made the session more interactive. Although we encountered some technical issues, they were manageable and didn’t disrupt the overall flow of the lecture.
What Could Have Been Done Differently: Looking back, I could have approached the family medicine project with a more prepared mindset, understanding that verifying audio recordings might require more time and effort than I initially thought. This realization would have helped me pace myself better and avoid fatigue.
What I Learned About Myself When Working with Others: This week reinforced my understanding of the importance of adaptability and patience when working on tasks that require a high level of detail. I also learned the value of clear communication, especially in a setting like the taster lecture, where we had to adjust our approach to suit the needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds. It was rewarding to see how teaching in Cantonese made the content more accessible to the students.
What I Learned About Leadership: This week’s experiences highlighted the importance of preparation and flexibility in leadership. Whether it was handling technical issues during the lecture or meticulously verifying audio recordings, I learned that effective leadership often involves anticipating challenges and remaining calm and focused when they arise.
What Do I Want to Develop or Focus on Next? Moving forward, I want to focus on enhancing my ability to handle tedious and detail-oriented tasks without becoming overly fatigued. I also aim to improve my technical troubleshooting skills, particularly in educational settings, to ensure that future taster lectures run even more smoothly.
What I Still Need to Develop: I still need to develop greater stamina and focus for tasks that require prolonged concentration, such as verifying difficult audio recordings. Additionally, I want to continue honing my ability to adapt to the needs of diverse audiences, ensuring that the content I help deliver is accessible and engaging for all participants.
