The effect of a loss of a sense of agency on apathy
This research investigates how a loss of sense of agency influences apathy. The sense of agency refers to the perceived control over one’s actions, while apathy is defined as a lack of motivation. Over the past summer, our studies were focused on healthy participants aged 18-30 years-old.
The next step of this study will be working with patients with Parkinson’s disease, a disorder characterized by akinesia and in which ~40% of patients experience apathy. While apathy in Parkinson’s is attributed to dopamine loss, reduced agency resulting from motor impairment may also play a critical role. If the loss of a sense agency can to increase apathy, as preliminary results suggest, enhancing agency could represent a novel therapeutic approach to alleviate apathy.
I'd like to thank the Laidlaw Foundation, and the LNCO for giving me to opportunity to work on such a meaningful research project this summer.
