I am an undergraduate student at Brown pursuing undergraduate education in Computer Science and Chemistry. I intend to proceed to Medical School and ultimately specialize in Neurosurgery. I play soccer.

Hi! I'm Elena, a pre-med student-athlete at Brown University studying Chemistry and Literary Arts! I love deep talks, working out, and thrill-seeking. I am so excited to be a part of the Laidlaw Scholars Network!  This summer, I am working on data extraction for a systematic review of themes relevant to mental health in Filipino communities. In collaboration with Dr. Melissa Palma, I will also develop an independent study project that identifies key shared beliefs among Filipino-American communities, notably immigrants, that correlate with reluctance against receiving preventative medical treatment.  I'd love to connect if you are looking into similar topics or if you'd like to geek out about research in general! 

Hello! I am Mairéad, a PPE student at Durham University. I am really interested in social justice and how human rights are upheld/fail to be upheld. I have aspirations to work in the international human rights sector. I am excited to hear about other people's research and looking forward to being part of the 2024 cohort of research and leadership scholars!  Outside of academics, I'm quite involved in some charity and activist work, particularly around the protection of refugee rights. I'm also big into netball and run my college's team!

Hello everyone. My name is Samantha and I am junior in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. I am pursuing a major in International Politics and a minor in Cognitive Science. I am originally from Connecticut. In my free time, I enjoy reading realistic fiction novels and going on walks. For my research summer, my faculty mentored project was titled African American Resiliency in the British Caribbean and I conducted research under Professor Anita Gonzalez of the American American Studies Department at Georgetown. The project focused on Cat Island, one of the out islands in The Bahamas, and explored the culture of Cat Island by mapping the island’s foodways, music traditions, and histories. Research methods included conducting oral interviews with local residents of Cat Island and participating in cultural practices. Ultimately, the project examined how Bahamian culture reflects the resiliency of Black populations that have survived forced migration and enslavement in the Caribbean. For my Leadership-in-Action project, I worked at Yahad - in Unum in Paris, France. The nonprofit is dedicated to investigating mass atrocities through interviewing witnesses and examining the sites of mass graves. Currently, Yahad has ongoing investigations in Eastern Europe, Guatemala, Iraq, and Ukraine. Additionally, the organization prioritizes genocide education. My independent project is dedicated to creating a Holocaust education workshop in collaboration with a museum in South Africa.

My ambition is to be a paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon while simultaneously dabbling in research, especially in molecular medicine and neuroscience which I find extremely interesting!  I have medical publications both completed and ongoing in cardiology, pharmacology, medical humanities, and anatomy!  I am an avid reader and enjoy Manga creation, still life drawing, and photography. I am also passionate about lifestyle and fitness, being a PADI Advanced Open Water Certified Diver, and a gym enthusiast!  Fun Fact : my name means Love and I’m about all things heart! 

My Laidlaw experience focuses on reframing the tourism industry to center the environment. In my first year, I developed a map of NYC's ecotourism, focused on environmental justice, circularity, and emissions reduction. In my second year in Santiago, Chile, I have collaborated with FEDETUR, the federation of tourism enterprises of Chile, to develop materials for tourism businesses to reduce their carbon footprint.

Hi I'm Conor, I'm a second year History and Political Science Student at Trinity College Dublin. I'm also born and raised in Dublin. This summer I will be researching the topic of refugee youth integration. I hope that this research will contribute towards helping understand a subject that is becoming more politically charged and relevant by the day, in a world that is more connected than ever before. In my spare time, I like to exercise, read, and walk my dog Cócó. I've also been known to enjoy a good Netflix series. Jensen Njagi is an undergraduate student studying International Agriculture and Rural Development/ Global Development; Economics and Development Concentration, with a Minor in Global Health. Guided by a global perspective, he hopes to apply his expertise to improve healthcare systems globally and address issues of global health inequality through multidisciplinary approaches. He’s particularly interested in making a difference by addressing global health issues through a combination of compassion, the generous support of friends, colleagues, and mentors, and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of geopolitics, economics, technology, and health His very non-linear and non-traditional path to global health and healthcare has truly enriched him. And he, therefore, looks forward to joining forces to improve, build and foster inclusive systems designed to achieve health equity, create wellness, and ultimately improve population health as well.

Hi everyone! I'm Clara Tobin, an English Student in Trinity College Dublin. My research examines the source material of William Shakespeare. In particular, I am attempting to identify a publication of the Middle English poetry found in the 'Allegory of Death' mural in the Stratford-upon-Avon Guild Chapel that may have influenced Shakespeare. Although the murals were covered during his lifetime due to laws around religious iconography during the Reformation, the resemblance between the murals and Shakespeare's work is uncanny and has not been studied in depth - until now! Aside from literature, I enjoy ballet, classical and jazz music (I play piano and saxophone), travelling and going to the theatre. Hello! I recently graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology Research from the University of Toronto. I’m passionate about youth mental health and how humour can be used to support resilience after adversity. My Summer 1 research project explored the relationship between childhood adversity, aggression, and self-regulation — deepening my understanding of the psychological impacts of early trauma. In Summer 2, I led a Leadership-in-Action project at SOS Children’s Villages in Cape Town, where I designed and facilitated a comedy-based mental health program for teens. That experience led me to found HaHaHelps — an organization that uses improv comedy to support youth mental health through accessible, community-led workshops. I'm currently piloting the full program in South Africa, with plans to expand to more communities globally.
