About Deep Thakkar
Hello wonderful people :D
My name is Deep and I am a first-year undergraduate studying Biology at Pembroke College, the University of Oxford.
I am also proud to be part of the 2025-2026 Laidlaw Scholars Cohort at the Oxford SDG Impact Lab!
I'm excited to learn about and get experience in using biology to create a meaningful impact in the world, particularly in the fields of conservation, climate change, ecology and sustainability.
I am also passionate about learning science and student empowerment! I hope to help build a world in which every child and student has the resources, support, guidance and opportunities to dream big; turn their dreams into goals; and turn their goals into reality. I hope to help build a world that is brighter, kinder and more loving, in which more people reach their full, golden glowing potential.
So far in my leadership journey, I have been creating meaningful impact on a small scale, through volunteering as a tutor and at my high school's pupil support centre; my current role as a student mentor at Biology By Clare; and more recently starting an online academic empowerment project! Over the years, I have become fascinated with ways we could empower more students using larger-scale initiatives, at the levels of education policy, charities and other organisations. Hence, I am very excited about my Laidlaw research project!
For my research project, I am going to be working in a group with some of my Laidlaw Scholar friends at the Oxford SDG Impact Lab. We are going to be researching how we can use co-curricular programmes to improve student well-being and educational outcomes, particularly with the hope of helping solve educational inequity in Oxfordshire.
Outside of Biology and academic empowerment, I love English Literature; Drama, Theatre and Film (I'm currently obsessed with the Wicked!). I am also a big Taylor Swift fan :)

Deep! Reading this brought back all the memories of year 1 Laidlaw summer - miss working with you in my team, but I am confident that Nikki, KeShaun, Ra'Kelle and Dr Andrea are so lucky to have your sunny presence! Oh my gosh, this blog post was amazing! I really love how you incorporated the process of creating it into the words themselves. I feel like I’ve been kind of restricting myself in my writing by using the Laidlaw journal prompts, but now I see I can use them as a guide, that I can choose to just elaborate on the ideas that resonate the most. I really admire how introspective you are and how developed your thoughts about your own thoughts are. In the rush of my LiA, I’ve struggled to make time to reflect deeply each week but I’m taking your post as an opportunity to get back to timeblocking and schedule that in. Deep, thank your vulnerability in letting us into the last two weeks! Reading all your highlights it certainly displays your passion and excitement! It is wonderful to see how much you have learnt, and are still learning! While some experiences may bring challenges, and with it the grief of what we want and the reality that is, this is part of our shared human journey of being lifelong, courageous and ambitious learners! Within this, we need to learn so much... how to look after ourselves while still working towards achieving our goals! I am pleased to read you are feeling recharged and better equipped to face this weeks new adventures!

Deep, thank you for your beautiful post which expresses so much joy, reflection and gratitude! Everyone at the Lab is deeply appreciative of your insights and words! Research brings its own challenges and with it leadership learnings and evolutions. Learning to balance seriousness with sincerity is an important observation and is something that you seem to be mindfully exploring as you develop your own leadership style. It sounds like, surround with a like-minded diverse community, you are ready to grow with as you tackle them you are up to the coming summer's challenges and opportunity with friendship, ambition and determination.
