Mahnoor Kamran

Student , University of Oxford

Hey :) I'm Mahnoor, a student at the University of Oxford specialising in human and environmental geography. My interest lies primarily in climate justice, and I have been working in the UK climate-change sector since 2021 on intersectional youth inclusion, just transition, green jobs, the energy sector, climate and environmental policy, and community-led action and co-creation. Through this work, I’ve collaborated with a wide range of organisations like the UN, the UK Government, think tanks, NGOs, philanthropic organisations, and youth-led charities. Currently, I am a trustee at the OVO Foundation, where I help deliver climate-justice grants. I also freelance as a workshop facilitator, consultant, and speaker on the topics above. My summer research explored the demand and supply-side restrictions to extracurricular provisions in Oxford, UK- which is on track to being published by Taylor and Francis. Please don't hesitate to reach out for a chat :)
Flavia Fernandez-Pita

History Student, University of St. Andrews

Hello! I'm an incoming third-year History student at the University of St Andrews. I'm from Madrid, Spain, but I moved to Scotland for university.  My research project focuses on the impact of the Cold War on sexuality and sexual expression among LGBTQ+ youth in Brazil and the relationship between sexuality and the state in a military dictatorship.

Abi Vernon

Student, Imperial College London

Hello everyone!  My name is Abi and I am a second year Geology student at Imperial College.  As someone who is passionate about sustainable energy and the preservation of our environment, my research project centres on how to make decarbonisation solutions economically viable - so that clean energy can be attained by all. I believe that money should never be a restriction - especially towards climate action, so I aim for my research to make decarbonisation a feasible target for everyone!  My hobbies include all things outdoors - hiking, travelling and climbing to mention a few - as well as crafty activities such as crochet and knitting!  I would like my Leadership in Action project to focus on my hobbies - using craft activities to help rebuild and give independence to a local community abroad, with an emphasis on sustainability. Perhaps using locally sourced material to produce goods which can be sold to help with living costs? If any of this sounds interesting, or if you’d simply like to chat, please feel free to reach out and connect! :)

Harpuneet Singh

Student, University Of Toronto

I'm a third-year Computer Science student at the University of Toronto, specializing in Computer Vision. My passion lies at the intersection of hardware and software solutions—aiming to build meaningful, impactful projects. Previously, I developed assistive technologies to support visually impaired students, making STEM education more inclusive and accessible. This summer, I'm working on a forensic science research project that involves optical dyeing using a multi-spectral LED array to enhance sperm cell identification in forensic samples. The tinkerer inside me loves messing around with robotics and tech, opening up random gadgets and making my own gizmos. Outside of technology, I enjoy cooking and exploring restaurants, always drawing inspiration for my next creation.

A 2nd year Physical Sciences student at Trinity College Dublin. I aim to become a better leader and get a ton of research experience :)
Ellen Duggan

English Studies Student, Trinity College Dublin

I am currently in my third year of English Studies at Trinity College Dublin, with a minor in Middle Eastern, Jewish & Islamic Civilisations. This year, I am undertaking an Erasmus exchange at the University of Bologna. My subject interests include post-colonial and modernist literature (especially in an Irish context), as well as representations of climate breakdown in media and the capacity of literature to empower people to take action.
Angela Chen

Laidlaw Scholar for Research & Leadership, Duke University

Hey friends! I’m Angela Chen, a third-year Public Policy, Psychology, & Digital Intelligence student at Duke University. I'm passionate about leveraging digital policy and journalism to democratize access to information. This past summer, as a Laidlaw Scholar for Research & Leadership and with Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy, I researched AI Policy, Music Streaming, & Cultural Labor in the EU & UK, culminating in presentations at the Oxford Rothermere American Institute, the Laidlaw Scholars Global Conference, and a forthcoming publication on Taylor & Francis. Previously, at the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, the world's leading think tank in science & technology policy, I investigated the use of AI in election information dissemination for minority language voters in the US. Having grown up in both Hong Kong and Canada, I also strongly believe in the importance of collaboration across geographical borders & cultures, and would love to chat—both about global information access and general cultural experiences! At Duke, I also help shape campus culture to maximize equity and inclusivity, particularly through Student Government—I believe that educational environments are key to fostering civic and civil discourse. Reach out here, on LinkedIn, or via email! I'm deeply grateful to be part of our inspiring Laidlaw Scholars community, and I can't wait to bond with as many of y'all as I can :)

Hello, I'm a Chemist at Imperial College London, born and raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 My research explores ionic liquid-based biomass fractionation in the Hallett research group as a joint study between my home department and the department of Chemical Engineering.  My academic interests are not particularly confined to a particular discipline within chemistry (organic, inorganic etc.) since they're very interconnected and interdependent in the grand pursuit of technologies to sustain people and the planet. I'm interested in chemical applications driving sustainable practices in chemical manufacturing, materials, energy, agriculture and automotive sectors. Happy to discuss ideas and collaborate!

Asad Tariq

Engineering Student, Imperial College London

Hey everyone! I'm an Electronic and Information Engineering student at Imperial College London who is deeply invested in harnessing technology to drive real-world impact. As a Laidlaw Scholar, I am exploring how solar energy, powered by machine learning and geospatial data, can power off-grid, rural villages in South Asia. By mapping solar irradiation and calculating infrastructure needs, I hope to prove the viability of using this technology for clean energy access and water purification. More broadly speaking, I am also interested in machine learning, Quantum Computing and startups. Feel free to connect and have a chat about any of these topics!
