I am a final-year undergraduate scholar pursuing a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Linguistics at the University of York. Besides being a scholar, I am the Arts and Humanities Subject Lead on the Scholar's Network and the 2020-22 Arts and Humanities faculty rep at the University of York! My first summer of research was based in phonetics, entitled 'The untapped potential of human language: Investigating the perception of typologically unattested and rare sounds'. In it, I get to look at phonemes that are not commonly found in speech, if at all!
My Leadership in Action project was based around the experiences of students with disabilities and long-term health conditions when accessing Higher Education in the UK. I'm currently creating teacher training based on the paper I wrote for this project, and working with UCAS to help inform UK university admissions policy.
Hey there! 👋 I'm a first-year student at the University of Toronto who's into machine learning, astronomy, and research. Currently, I'm an intern researcher at the UC Berkeley SETI Research Center to build a high-performance detection algorithm to search the nearest 1 million stars for signs of life beyond Earth using the VLA telescope and the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. When I'm not looking for aliens I love rock climbing, painting, and enjoying the outdoors!
Hi, I am an undergraduate student at the University of Hong Kong. I have some research experiences in heritage imaging, genome engineering, nanoparticle drug carrier, and surgical augmented reality. And I am currently learning more about computational bio-molecule stimulation and screening model for further studies.
I'd love to communicate, share, and build wholeheartedly about the past, present, and future stories.
Hello! I've been part of the Laidlaw Foundation for over 4 years, working on strengthening our global community and broadening our initiatives aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty, reducing inequality, and cultivating a new generation of leaders.
I'm currently completing a Masters in Anthropology & Professional Practice at UCL, delving into my passion for using ethnographic methods and design to effect systemic change, particularly in the education sector. My journey in design has been diverse, beginning with graphic design, transitioning into UX/UI and service design, and now evolving into systemic design and innovation.
Originally from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿, I pursued my undergraduate degree in Human Sciences at UCL. I'm an amateur naturalist, avid swimmer, and an obsessive podcast listener. Let's connect and chat—drop me a line and find me on LinkedIn! 💬👀
Scarlet is an undergraduate student studying Community Health and Biology at Tufts. She is interested in a combination of disciplines, including medicine, infectious disease transmission, global health, and climate and environmental health. At Tufts she also has worked as a Communications and Outreach Intern for the Environmental Studies Department, is part of Timmy Global Health, and runs for the Women's Track & Field team. Her research experience also includes vector-borne disease research of the Semliki Forest Complex in Samoa with the Williams Lab at Smith College. Currently in the Pickering Lab she is a Laidlaw Scholar working on the PARE project, studying emergent markers for antibiotic resistance in the environment and working to develop a usable test for classroom curricula which will analyze soil samples to map antibiotic resistance in efforts to mitigate this serious global health issue.
Steven Zeldin
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Researcher, Columbia University Irving Medical Center
From a young age, I have held a deep appreciation for people, how they think, and the ways they overcome the obstacles in their lives. This interest developed into an interest in medicine—and, since I am specifically interested by the manner in which people interact with the world physically, grew into a desire to study paralysis and the diseases that cause it. I now research Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease), a fatal paralyzing disease that strikes adults seemingly randomly and usually leads to death within a few years of onset. Working from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, I seek to find a clinical marker for the disease, with the eventual hopes of more easily identifying it in patients, tracking its progress, and determining its response to various medications. Having previously researched the effects of hemorrhagic stroke, I have built up a wide and deep understanding of not only the science of brain disorders, but their real and severe consequences. Apart from my work in research, I am interested in science fiction, bouldering, and writing. Recognizing the emotional toll of losing access to one's body has left a deep impression upon me—keeping healthy has become a recent passion of mine.
Hi there! My name is Michelle Wang and I'm majoring in criminology and political science at the University of Toronto, Canada. As a 2020 Laidlaw scholar, I am incredibly excited to work on a project that I am passionate about and join this global network of scholars!!
I'm a third-year student at the University of Toronto studying Physiology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Spanish. For my Laidlaw Project, I'm researching the impact of land disturbance on invasive and endemic plant species in the Galápagos Archipelago. Apart from studying invasive species and their growth and spread, my research interests also lie in neuroscience and the memory loss that comes with neurodegeneration. Outside the lab/field, I can be found rock climbing, reading, and exploring cafés all over the city of Toronto.
I am a PhD researcher in Global Health at University College London. I am also a qualified pharmacist (MPharm and BSc Pharm) with an MSc degree in sociology. My research interests include global health, health inequity, health policy, politics and systems and gender. More details are available here.

I'm currently a biology major on the premed track, but I'm also interested in public health. Research-wise, I am very interested in the field of immunology, especially autoimmunity. I wish to study the mechanisms behind autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Type I diabetes. I have worked in several research laboratories in the past: studying inflammatory responses in zebrafish, using biophysical tools to look at the structure of RNA molecules, and most recently, I'm doing work-study as a research assistant at Columbia's Morphogenesis and Developmental Biomechanics lab.
